Could a land line save your life...

Here is a thought.

Land lines are connected to 9-1-1.

An emergency call center.   When you call them they know where the call comes from.  Possibly who the caller is.  And if you get disconnected...the operators know where to send help.

A friend not long ago had a diabetic incident.   She called 9-1-1.

She was talking to the operator when she passed out....She had only talked about 30 seconds and had not given her address.

She had called on ... a cell phone.  She did NOT have a land line.

She was now laying on the floor going into a diabetic coma.   The dispatcher had no idea where she was calling from although she was calling from her home.

She was lucky.  She had collapsed in front of her sliding glass door.  A neighbor happened to be walking by and seen her on the floor.

The neighbor called for help   and saved the woman's life.

I understand having a cell phone.  Convenience is great.  You always have your phone at your side and never miss a call.

But, think of the emergencies that happen in life.

Medical issues

Fire and more.

When you call 9-1-1 from a land line the call center knows where the emergency is.

Call from your cell phone it is any ones guess.

For me I will not jeapordize  my life and safety  by not having a land line I can count on knowing where I am calling from if I need help

Just a thought!!!

Cell phones have tracking devices on them.  Probably would have taken a few minutes to get her location, but they could have done it.

Evelyn...Yes they do, but even a few minutes could be the difference between life and death

Not all small communites have the abiblity to start searching and many call centers really don't always have the time to start searching

I have a land line used only for faxes... for those dinosaurs in my life. I only use my cell phone. Good thought!

That's food for thought, William!  Interestingly enough, I had a little discussion with myself.  What would happen if I was to have an incident similar to what you describe your friend as having.  It might be a few days before my body was discovered.  It wasn't exactly that that worried me, it was that my cats wouldn't be fed!  I now have cat doors from the outside to inside my garage, and from the kitchen door from the garage.  At least the cats can leave and go visit a neighbor in my "absence!"

If the phone has a contract the put your primary billing address to show up at 911 also. At least in the states I have lived in, even getting a Skype number from the computer it will ask you to input a 911 address for records.

William - I think that is the only reason my wife won't get rid of our land line.

...I know folks do not want to be followed and tracked...but if you turn tracking off this is what can happen.

You provide some good thought here! We did get rid of our landline this year because we never use it with four cell phones.

William Feela I only have land lines at the office and that is for the same reason Sussie Sutton mentions, fax's. There is comfort in having one but that being said I may even get rid of the ones in the office.

9-1-1 calls have saved more lives than we know.  It is an easy call for kids to make even when they can't give great info.

In this case the land line can save a persons life.

Good luck and success.

I know that my cell phone automatically assesses a 911 fee so that the address will show up based on the gps location of the cell phone.
